About H261 files

The .H261 file format contains raw digital video data compressed using the H.261 standard. Developed by the International Telecommunication Union in 1990, it was primarily designed for video teleconferencing over ISDN phone lines. The format strictly limits video resolution to CIF (352x288) or QCIF (176x144).

Most modern software no longer supports this obsolete format natively. You can occasionally open raw .H261 bitstreams using command-line multimedia frameworks like FFmpeg or versatile media players like VLC media player.

Users must convert this file because the H.261 codec is entirely unsupported by web browsers, mobile devices, and modern video editors. The format produces extremely low-quality video by today's standards and relies on outdated macroblock compression. Keeping files in this raw bitstream format makes playback unnecessarily difficult and prevents easy sharing on social media or cloud platforms.
