About GXD files
The .gxd extension is shared by two distinct file formats, creating frequent confusion. The most common use is a General CADD Pro drawing file. This is a proprietary 2D CAD format developed by General CADD Products as a successor to the legacy Generic CADD software. These files are internally GZIP compressed to save space, which makes them unreadable to standard text editors or unauthorized CAD tools. Users typically encounter friction because .gxd files cannot be opened directly in industry-standard software like AutoCAD or DraftSight. To edit these drawings in modern workflows, they must be converted to DXF or DWG.
The second common format is a LabChip data file, originally developed by PerkinElmer (now managed by Revvity). These files contain electrophoresis analysis data, including DNA/RNA sizing and quantitation results. Researchers often need to convert this raw proprietary data into CSV for analysis in Excel or PDF for publication, as the raw .gxd file is useless outside the specific LabChip GX Reviewer software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GXD file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use General CADD Pro or similar software from the "2D CAD Drawing" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to GXD, try General CADD Pro or another comparable tool in the "2D CAD Drawing" category.
The GXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GXD converter.
