Convert GVRS to another file type

To convert GVRS Raster images to another format, you need Gridfour Core or other GIS software.

Convert a file to GVRS

To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Raster Store" file type, you need software like Gridfour Core or a similar tool.

About GVRS files

The .gvrs format is a Gridfour Virtual Raster Store Image created by the Gridfour Software Project. It stores highly compressed raster data, specifically gridded geophysical datasets like bathymetry (ocean depth) and elevation models. The format relies on custom compression algorithms designed for massive floating-point spatial data arrays.

The main disadvantage of .gvrs is its extreme niche status. Standard GIS applications like QGIS or ArcGIS cannot open it natively. It is completely unsupported by standard image viewers or web browsers. Accessing the raw data typically requires writing custom code using the Java-based Gridfour API.

Users usually need to convert .gvrs to TIFF (specifically GeoTIFF) for spatial analysis, CSV for raw grid data manipulation, or PNG for visual representation. Converting to standard image formats like PNG will result in the loss of the underlying multidimensional floating-point data, preserving only a visual snapshot.

Because .gvrs is a highly specialized, niche format, it is difficult to process with standard tools. Often, only the original Gridfour libraries can accurately extract the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GVRS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert GVRS file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use Gridfour Core or similar software from the "Gridded Geophysical Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to GVRS, try Gridfour Core or another comparable tool in the "Gridded Geophysical Data Storage" category.

The GVRS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GVRS converter.
