About GSTENCIL files

A .GSTENCIL file is a vector shape library and diagramming asset used by OmniGraffle, a popular macOS and iOS diagramming application developed by The Omni Group. It contains reusable UI components, wireframe templates, and custom shapes. To open these files natively, you must use OmniGraffle. The primary disadvantage of the .GSTENCIL format is its extreme vendor lock-in. It is proprietary and requires an expensive, Apple-exclusive application to view. Windows and Linux users are completely locked out, and standard web browsers do not support the format natively. This makes sharing design assets with external teams highly frustrating. For maximum compatibility, it is best to convert these stencils to SVG for scalable vector editing, PDF for document distribution, or PNG for instant web previews. Be aware that exporting away from the native format will strip proprietary logic, such as magnetic connection points and auto-layout constraints. Because this file format is a closed, proprietary Apple ecosystem format, it is difficult to convert.
