About GRY files

A .GRY file serves two entirely different purposes, but both face major compatibility issues. Most commonly, it is a Generalmusic (GEM) Style File used by legacy electronic keyboards from Generalmusic (like the Genesys or WK series) to store musical accompaniment patterns like drum loops and basslines. Because the manufacturer is out of business, these files are effectively hardware-locked. They use proprietary SysEx data that modern digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro or Cubase cannot natively read. To edit these tracks or migrate them to modern arranger keyboards, you must convert the .GRY file to a standard .MID (MIDI) file or a Yamaha .STY style file. Alternatively, in scientific or technical imaging, a .GRY file is a Raw Grayscale Image. Unlike a standard .JPEG or .PNG, a raw grayscale file often lacks a standard header that tells the software the image's dimensions or color depth. This means standard image viewers will throw an 'Unknown Format' error unless you use tools like Adobe Photoshop to 'Open As Raw' and manually enter the exact pixel width and height.
