About GPE files
The .GPE file format is an executable file used exclusively by the GP2X, an open-source, Linux-based handheld video game console developed by GamePark Holdings. These files function as the main application or game launcher on the device, similar to how .EXE files work on Windows or .SH scripts work on standard Linux distributions. Users interact with these files natively on the GP2X hardware or via emulation software like MAME or specialized GP2X emulators. The primary disadvantage of the .GPE format is its extreme hardware specificity. It is proprietary to a discontinued, legacy hardware platform running an ARM-based processor. You cannot natively open or run a .GPE file on modern Windows, macOS, or standard web browsers without an emulator. Furthermore, if the file is a compiled binary, it will appear as unreadable gibberish in a standard text editor. Users often seek to convert or open these files to extract internal assets, such as embedded .PNG sprites, .WAV audio clips, or configuration data. Direct conversion of a compiled .GPE executable into a modern .EXE or .APP is impossible without the original source code and cross-compilation toolchains. However, because many .GPE files are simply plain-text Linux shell scripts used to boot the actual game binary, extracting the text is a common requirement. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it relies heavily on specific legacy hardware instructions and embedded proprietary data. Often, only the original software or hardware can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GPE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GPE file to PDF, EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT or CMD, you can use GP2X Emulator or similar software from the "GP2X Console Executable" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to GPE, try GP2X Emulator or another comparable tool in the "GP2X Console Executable" category.
The GPE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPE converter.
