About GORM files

The .gorm file format is a User Interface (UI) resource file created by Gorm, the official interface builder for the GNUstep development environment. It stores the visual layout and serialized Objective-C objects for windows, menus, buttons, and other UI elements used in GNUstep applications.

To open or edit these files natively, you must use the Gorm application within a running GNUstep environment.

This format presents significant disadvantages for average users. It is highly proprietary and strictly bound to the GNUstep developer ecosystem. Furthermore, a .gorm file is often a "bundle" - a directory acting as a single file on supported systems - which makes sharing it across standard Windows or macOS environments confusing and error-prone. Users without the GNUstep runtime cannot open or interact with the file, and it requires a dedicated development environment to use.

Converting a .gorm file to other UI formats like Apple's XIB or NIB is highly complex and usually requires manual recreation. Because the file contains serialized objects rather than standard visual or text data, standard online converters fail completely when trying to process it.

This file format is difficult to open or convert. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Since .gorm files are often bundles containing readable data like PLIST or class dumps, our analysis can inspect the internal content and extract embedded text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GORM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GORM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GORM converter.
