Convert GKS to another file type
To convert GKS graphics files to another format, you need Legacy GKS Libraries or other Vector Image software.
Convert a file to GKS
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Graphics Standard" file type, you need software like Legacy GKS Libraries or a similar tool.
About GKS files
The .gks file extension is primarily associated with the Graphics Kernel System (GKS), an early ISO standard (ISO 7942) for 2D computer graphics introduced in the 1980s. It acts as a metafile or graphics storage container for line drawings, plots, and basic vector graphics generated by legacy scientific and engineering systems.
Because it is a highly obsolete standard originally developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), modern support is nearly non-existent. Historically, it was used by specialized mainframe graphics libraries and early CAD software.
Users typically encounter .gks files when migrating legacy data, extracting plots from decades-old mainframes, or archiving old scientific research. The primary disadvantage is a complete lack of interoperability with modern operating systems and web browsers. No standard vector tool like Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD natively imports it anymore. You are essentially locked out of the data unless you convert it.
The best conversion targets for legacy vector plots are DXF for CAD applications, SVG for web compatibility, or CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile, which largely replaced GKS). Converting out of .gks is mandatory to view or edit the files today, though some original rendering metadata or 1980s stroke scaling may be lost during the translation.
This is a highly obscure, legacy format. Standard online converters will fail to process it because they lack the specific GKS parsing libraries required to decode decades-old geometry. If our analysis detects supported underlying vectors, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GKS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert GKS file to SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, EMF, SWF, FLA, XFL or SKETCH, you can use Legacy GKS Libraries or similar software from the "Legacy 2D Vector Graphics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert AFPUB, EPS, FIG, VSD, SKETCH, VDX, AFPHOTO, PDF, AFDESIGN, SVG, VSDX or AI files to GKS, try Legacy GKS Libraries or another comparable tool in the "Legacy 2D Vector Graphics" category.
The GKS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GKS converter.
