About GGPACK files

The .ggpack file is a proprietary resource archive utilized by games built on the Dinky engine, most notably Thimbleweed Park and Return to Monkey Island. It functions as a massive container that stores all the essential game assets, including graphics, audio tracks, fonts, and dialogue scripts. These files are directly read by the game executable published by Terrible Toybox. There is no official standalone software to open or edit them, forcing modders to rely on community-developed command-line tools like ggpack-extract.

The primary disadvantage of the .ggpack format is its closed, undocumented nature. Standard archiving tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR fail to recognize the file signature and cannot mount the archive. The files frequently exceed several gigabytes in size and often use custom indexing or lightweight obfuscation (XOR encryption). Users trying to retrieve a specific soundtrack, translate dialogue, or rip a sprite are completely locked out without technical workarounds.

When extracting data, the best target formats are standard, widely supported media files. Sprites and backgrounds extract well to PNG files, voice lines and music are typically exported to OGG or WAV, and game logic or translation strings can be converted to TXT or JSON. Note that compiled scripts may lose their original human-readable formatting or variable names during the extraction process.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because of its bespoke, game-specific structure. Often, only the original game engine can properly read, index, or export the data flawlessly. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GGPACK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
