About G723 files

The .g723 file is an extremely low-bitrate audio format utilizing the G.723 ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) standard. Developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), it was heavily used in early VoIP (Voice over IP), digital dictation systems, and legacy surveillance hardware to compress human speech into tiny file sizes. Software like FFmpeg or specialized audio converters like Awave Studio are typically required to process it.

You need to convert this file because the G.723 format is effectively obsolete and entirely unsupported by modern consumer technology. Browsers, smartphones, and standard media players simply lack the codec required to decode the audio stream. Furthermore, because it is an antiquated telecommunications standard, the audio quality is notoriously poor - optimized only for basic speech intelligibility over narrow bandwidth connections.

We strongly recommend converting .g723 files to universally supported formats like WAV or MP3. While converting will not restore lost audio quality or improve the muffled telephonic sound, it guarantees you can actually play the file on any device without downloading obscure telecom software.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard audio libraries rarely bundle legacy ITU-T speech codecs. Often, only the original telecom software or specialized command-line tools can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
