About G3N files

A .G3N file is typically a raw Group 3 Fax image, representing a single page of a fax transmission conforming to the ITU-T T.4 standard. While once ubiquitous in telecommunications for transmitting documents over telephone lines, these files are now largely obsolete and problematic for modern workflows. A major limitation is that .G3N files often lack standard image headers found in JPG or PNG files, meaning default operating system viewers (like Windows Photos or macOS Preview) usually cannot open them, or they display them as distorted noise. Furthermore, they are strictly 1-bit monochrome (black and white), which limits editing capabilities. To make these files usable, they must be converted. For archiving multi-page fax documents, the industry standard is to compile them into a PDF or PDF/A. For graphical editing or use in web applications, converting to TIFF (which natively supports standard compression) or PNG is recommended.
