A .ful file is most frequently a proprietary Firmware Update package used by HP printers and multifunctional devices. These files contain the binary payload required to upgrade the device's operating system, fix bugs, or patch security vulnerabilities. A secondary but significant use (approx. 6%) is within Industrial Automation, specifically as a Function Unit Library created by B&R Industrial Automation (now part of ABB) for use in Automation Studio. These modules store reusable code blocks and logic for programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
The core challenge with .ful files is their opacity and lack of standard interoperability. Because they are compiled binary blobs (HP) or encapsulated library archives (B&R), they cannot be opened by standard text editors or operating system tools. Users often encounter these files when a firmware update fails, leaving them with an unusable file that Windows identifies simply as "generic." Furthermore, Microsoft SQL Server occasionally uses this extension for backups, creating confusion. Attempting to open a firmware file in a word processor can corrupt the header data, rendering it useless for the device.
For HP Firmware, the file is not meant to be "converted" in the traditional sense but applied using HP Web Jetadmin or a USB drive; however, developers may convert it to BIN or HEX for analysis. For B&R Function Libraries, the ideal workflow is importing them back into Automation Studio. If you are dealing with a text-based backup or log file masquerading as a .ful, converting to TXT or PDF allows for easy archiving and viewing.
