About FSPY files

The .FSPY file extension is a project file created by fSpy, an open-source tool used for still image camera matching. It stores mathematical parameters like focal length, principal point, and camera orientation derived from a 2D reference photograph. 3D artists use these files primarily to align virtual 3D scenes with real-world 2D images in software like Blender.

A major disadvantage of the .FSPY format is its extreme niche application. It is a proprietary, application-specific data container. Users frequently mistake it for an actual 3D model or an image file, but it contains zero 3D geometry and no raster image data. It only holds the calibration matrix. Because it is highly specialized, standard web browsers, image viewers, and mainstream 3D modeling programs cannot open it natively. You usually must install a dedicated importer add-on, such as the official fSpy-Blender plugin, just to use the data.

Converting .FSPY files is rarely straightforward because the mathematical matrix must be carefully translated into the exact camera coordinate system of the target software. Standard online converters fail entirely because they incorrectly assume it is an image. If you need to extract the numerical values, the best conversion targets are generic text formats like JSON, XML, or TXT.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original software or specific importer scripts can properly read and parse the internal matrix data. If our analysis detects the underlying text-based or JSON-like structure, you can inspect the numerical camera calibration data directly without installing any software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FSPY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FSPY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FSPY converter.
