The .FODS file format is a Flat XML OpenDocument Spreadsheet. Unlike standard ODS files that use ZIP compression to bundle multiple XML files, images, and metadata into a single archive, a .FODS file stores the entire spreadsheet - including data, formatting, and macros - in one uncompressed, continuous XML document.
Developed under the OASIS standard, it is primarily created and managed using LibreOffice Calc. The primary use case for this uncompressed format is to allow version control systems (like Git) to track line-by-line code changes, or to make automated XML processing easier for developers.
The main disadvantage of the .FODS format is its massive file size. Because it lacks ZIP compression, a spreadsheet that takes up 50KB as an ODS file can easily exceed several megabytes as a .FODS file. This makes them highly inefficient for email attachments or long-term storage. Furthermore, many standard spreadsheet applications, including older versions of Microsoft Excel and mobile document viewers, will fail to open them natively or will crash trying to parse the massive XML tree.
To resolve storage and compatibility problems, you should convert .FODS files based on your goal. For standard sharing and seamless editing, convert to XLSX (Excel).
