About FAMILYFILE files

The .familyfile extension is a proprietary genealogy database used by Reunion, a family tree application developed by Leister Productions. These files store comprehensive ancestry data, including individual profiles, complex family relationships, dates, notes, source citations, and links to multimedia. You can natively open and edit these files only on macOS and iOS devices running the Reunion software. Because .familyfile is a closed, proprietary format, it comes with severe disadvantages for collaboration. Users cannot open these files natively on Windows or Linux, and sharing data with relatives requires both parties to own a paid software license and an Apple device. Furthermore, standard online converters fail to process .familyfile documents because the internal database structure is not publicly documented. The industry standard target format for genealogy data is GED (GEDCOM), which allows cross-platform sharing with tools like Ancestry or Family Tree Maker. Exporting to GED must usually be done from within the original software, which often strips out proprietary formatting and media links. This file format is difficult to open or convert externally. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying database structure or embedded format, viewing raw text, metadata, or conversion may still be possible without a Mac.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FAMILYFILE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
