Extract text from Nastran output files (F06)

The .F06 file is primarily a Nastran Analysis Output file generated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. When engineers run simulations to test structural integrity, aerodynamics, or thermal stress, solvers like MSC Nastran, Siemens Simcenter Nastran, or ANSYS write the numerical results, warnings, and error logs into this file. A smaller percentage of .F06 files are associated with legacy tax preparation software containing user data for the 2006 tax year.
The fundamental problem with the .F06 format is its size and structure. Although it is technically a plain-text file, an .F06 file from a complex FEA run can easily exceed several gigabytes. Opening a 2GB text file will instantly freeze standard editors like Windows Notepad. Furthermore, the data is printed in a highly specific, fixed-width column layout intended for older line printers. This makes it difficult to read, filter, or parse on modern screens. Users often need to convert or extract specific tabular data blocks from the .F06 file into CSV or XLSX formats to plot graphs in Microsoft Excel, or into PDF for easier sharing and reporting with clients.
Because these files are highly specific to the FEA solver that generated them, finding a generic converter that understands the internal matrices and blocks is extremely difficult. Often, only specialized post-processing software or custom Python scripts can properly read and export the structured data.
