About EVI files

The .EVI file format is primarily used by EverFocus DVR systems to store surveillance video. It is a proprietary, multiplexed video container designed to securely record footage from multiple security cameras simultaneously. A smaller percentage of .EVI files are used in scientific environments as X-ray image sequences created by eV Products EV-Imager software or the Envision file format, which can be opened with ImageJ.

Users frequently need to convert .EVI files because the format is highly restrictive. It is a closed, proprietary CCTV format. You cannot open these files in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, and they are not supported by web browsers. Sending an .EVI file to law enforcement or an insurance company often results in the recipient being unable to view the evidence without installing the specialized EverFocus Evidence Player.

The best target formats for conversion are MP4 or AVI for video, which offer universal playback on any device. For X-ray sequences, converting to TIFF or PNG ensures lossless image quality. When converting CCTV footage, be aware that you might lose proprietary metadata such as tamper-evident watermarks or exact multi-camera synchronization timestamps.

Converting .EVI files is notoriously difficult because they often contain heavily multiplexed data streams and non-standard video headers designed to prevent tampering rather than promote interoperability. Often, only the original hardware or the specific Evidence Player software can properly decrypt or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an unencrypted H.264 video stream - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EVI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EV1, AVI, XAPK, EGISENC and MP4 files.
