The .ek6 file is a binary save data file used exclusively by Generation 6 Pokémon video games, which includes Pokémon X, Pokémon Y, Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire for the Nintendo 3DS. Players typically rely on specialized save management tools like PKHeX or 3DS emulators such as Citra to handle these files.
The major disadvantage of the .ek6 format is its proprietary, closed nature. It utilizes game-specific encryption and checksums. Standard databases, text editors, and spreadsheet software cannot open these files, meaning the data is completely locked inside the Pokémon ecosystem. Editing the file manually without recalculating the cryptographic checksums will immediately corrupt the save data and ruin hundreds of hours of gameplay.
When converting, users generally want to extract individual characters to .pk6 files, or export the raw statistical data into JSON or TXT files to catalog their progress. Note that converting to a standard text format is a one-way process; you will lose the ability to inject that text file back into the game cartridge.
