About EDRWX files

An .EDRWX file is an XPS Drawing Document, primarily used to store 2D CAD layouts exported from SolidWorks eDrawings. It functions by wrapping standard EDRW CAD data inside Microsoft's XML Paper Specification (XPS) container format, allowing engineers to share designs as digital printouts. However, the .EDRWX format comes with severe disadvantages for modern users. Microsoft's XPS format is effectively dead, completely overshadowed by PDF. Consequently, these files offer terrible cross-platform compatibility: they cannot be opened natively on macOS, iOS, Android, or standard web browsers. Even on Windows, the native Microsoft XPS Viewer is no longer installed by default. This forces recipients to either manually enable legacy Windows features or download bulky, proprietary CAD viewers just to see a basic 2D floorplan or part drawing. To make the designs accessible, we recommend converting .EDRWX to universal formats. Converting to a PDF document is the best approach, as it preserves the vector geometry for high-quality printing. Alternatively, rasterized image formats like JPG or PNG are perfect for quick web viewing and email sharing. Because .EDRWX files contain highly specific CAD vectors locked inside a proprietary, obsolete Microsoft container, they are notoriously difficult to open or convert.
