About E2 files
The .e2 file format primarily stores a 2D mechanical CAD drawing created in PTC Creo Elements/Direct Drafting (formerly CoCreate). In electrical engineering, it is also frequently used for schematic and project data in EPLAN Electric P8. Rarely, it acts as a data container for ERS SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite telemetry managed by the European Space Agency.
Users usually need to convert .e2 files because they are highly specialized, proprietary data containers. You cannot open an .e2 drawing in a web browser, standard image viewer, or basic text editor. Sharing these files with clients or manufacturing partners is frustrating unless the recipient also pays for an expensive, specialized software license.
The best target formats for an .e2 CAD file are DXF, DWG, or PDF. Converting to DXF allows compatibility with AutoCAD and CNC machines. Converting to PDF is ideal for client review. However, be aware that proprietary macros, dynamic block data, or custom EPLAN layers may be flattened or lost during the transition.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online because it uses a closed, legacy internal structure based on the Microsoft Compound document architecture. Standard online converters will fail completely. Often, only the original native software can properly read or export the geometry. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your E2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The E2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our E2 converter.
