The .DVL file is a proprietary digital publication format created by Dalim Software. Functioning much like an interactive magazine or a standard PDF, these files store high-fidelity page layouts, text, raster images, and multimedia elements such as embedded videos, slideshows, and bookmarks. They are primarily generated within Dalim's high-end prepress workflows (like TWiST or ES) to allow clients to review print proofs and digital publications directly on mobile devices using the Dalim Virtual Library app for iOS.
Despite its utility in professional print production, the .DVL format is heavily restricted. Its most significant disadvantage is that it is a closed, proprietary file type locked to a specific iOS app. You cannot open a .DVL file natively on Windows, macOS, or standard Android devices. Furthermore, standard desktop tools like Adobe Acrobat or common web browsers cannot parse the .DVL container. This creates a massive roadblock if you need to share the proof with a stakeholder who does not own an Apple device or lacks the necessary software.
To bypass these artificial limitations, converting the file to standard formats is essential. The best conversion target is a PDF document, which preserves the page layout, text, and static imagery for universal sharing. If you only need the visual proof, extracting the pages to JPG or PNG is highly practical. However, be aware that exporting to flat formats will strip away any interactive hyperlinks, embedded videos, or multi-image slideshows present in the original container.
