About DV2 files

The .dv2 file is a proprietary game data archive used by Divinity II, a role-playing game developed by Larian Studios. These files function as digital containers that store bundled game assets, including 3D models, textures, audio tracks, and scripted events. Game engines use these custom archives to stream data efficiently during gameplay and to obscure assets from casual copying.

Users typically interact with .dv2 files when attempting to mod the game, translate text, or extract the original soundtrack. However, the format presents major disadvantages. It is a closed, undocumented binary container. Standard archive managers like 7-Zip or macOS Archive Utility cannot read it. The files are often extremely large and cannot be opened natively by any standard operating system or web browser.

To make the data usable, the archive must be unpacked into its component parts. The best target formats depend on the extracted asset type. Extracted textures should be saved as DDS or PNG, 3D models as FBX or OBJ, and audio streams as OGG or WAV. Be aware that extracting these files often results in a loss of the original directory structure, requiring manual sorting.

Because .dv2 uses proprietary compression, standard online file converters fail to process it. Usually, only specialized community-built extraction tools designed specifically for the Divinity engine can properly read the file. If our analysis detects standard embedded headers, limited extraction of media or code may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DV2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
