About DSNWRK files

The .DSNWRK file format is a proprietary workspace container used primarily by Altium Designer, a leading Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software. Its primary function is to bundle multiple Printed Circuit Board (PCB) projects - like PRJPCB, SCHDOC, and PCBDOC files - into a single cohesive interface. This allows electronics engineers to manage complex multi-board designs simultaneously. However, the .DSNWRK format has severe disadvantages for everyday sharing. It is highly proprietary and tightly locked into the Altium ecosystem, which requires an expensive commercial license. Furthermore, a .DSNWRK file does not actually contain any graphical schematic or PCB layout data. It is essentially a text-based pointer file that references the file paths of the actual projects on the creator's local hard drive. If you receive a .DSNWRK file without the accompanying project files, it is completely useless for viewing designs. Users often try to convert .DSNWRK files to PDF or JPG to view the circuit schematics, but standard online converters fail because there is no graphic data to extract. To share the actual designs, the original author must export the individual SCHDOC or PCBDOC files to PDF or .Gerber formats directly within Altium Designer.
