About DP1 files

The .DP1 file is a legacy DataPower Database originally used to store structured tables, forms, and multimedia content. Developed primarily for educational environments, these files stored student data and school projects on early Acorn computers and older Windows systems.

The proprietary file was managed by Logotron DataPower (later renamed ViewPoint). Because this software is now abandonware, opening the file today is incredibly difficult. You cannot open a .DP1 file directly in modern operating systems or web browsers, and maintaining an Acorn RISC OS emulator just to read an old database is highly impractical. The format is completely closed-source, meaning its internal structure is hidden and undocumented.

Users typically need to convert .DP1 files simply to salvage trapped historical data. The best conversion targets are CSV or XLSX for the tabular data, and standard formats like JPG for any embedded images. Converting to CSV will permanently lose the original form layouts, colors, and UI formatting, but it guarantees that the core text records survive and remain accessible.

Because .DP1 is an undocumented, obsolete format, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can correctly parse and export the database. Even if the proprietary wrapper is unsupported, our analysis engine can often bypass the headers to extract unencrypted text records and embedded media files directly from the archive.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DP1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DP1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DP1 converter.
