About DMSP files

The .DMSP file is a proprietary PhotoSuite Project File originally utilized by photo editing software from Sonic Solutions (later acquired by Roxio/Corel). These files save the working state of an image editing session, including multiple image layers, applied filters, text overlays, and masking data. To open and fully interact with these files, users historically relied on Roxio PhotoSuite or similar legacy software suites. A major disadvantage of the .DMSP format is its highly closed, proprietary nature and its reliance on obsolete software. Modern operating systems and standard image viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview cannot read the proprietary layer data. This traps users' historical photos inside dead project files. Without an active installation of PhotoSuite, accessing the original photos or text is extremely difficult. To regain access to your images, the best conversion targets are standard raster formats like JPG or PNG. Converting to JPG creates a flattened, universally readable image, though you will lose the distinct editable layers. Converting to PNG offers a flattened image with lossless quality. Because the format is proprietary and undocumented, standard online converters usually fail to process the rendering engine instructions required to rebuild the image. This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original PhotoSuite software can properly read and export the layered data.
