A .DIVX file is a proprietary multimedia container based on the RIFF and AVI formats, designed to store highly compressed video using the DivX codec. Historically, it was a breakthrough format for fitting DVD-quality movies onto standard CD-ROMs. You can open these files using the official DivX Player or versatile open-source alternatives like VLC media player. Today, the .DIVX format is largely obsolete. It relies on the older MPEG-4 Part 2 standard, which is heavily outperformed by modern codecs like H.264 or H.265. Native playback support on modern operating systems, web browsers, and mobile devices (iOS and Android) is virtually non-existent. Furthermore, the format can incorporate restrictive Digital Rights Management (DRM) that prevents playback on unauthorized software.
