About DHV files

The .DHV file is a proprietary embroidery design format created specifically for Husqvarna Viking sewing and embroidery machines. It contains highly specific digitized stitch data, thread color palettes, and X/Y mechanical coordinates that instruct the machine on exactly how to stitch a pattern onto fabric.

These files are typically managed and transferred using specialized embroidery ecosystems like mySewnet or legacy Husqvarna Viking VIP Customizing software. You will often encounter them when purchasing digital embroidery patterns online or retrieving backups from older machine storage mediums.

The main disadvantage of the .DHV format is severe hardware lock-in. Because it relies on a proprietary mechanical instruction set rather than standard image data, web browsers, default OS image viewers, and standard graphic editors cannot read or display it. Sharing a .DHV file with a user who owns a Brother or Janome machine is useless without conversion. Furthermore, legacy Husqvarna software often requires expensive dongles or outdated Windows operating systems just to open the file.

To ensure compatibility across different brands, you should convert .DHV to widely adopted machine formats like PES (Brother), JEF (Janome), or DST (Tajima) for commercial multi-needle machines. If you only need to show a preview of the design to a client, converting to a raster format like PNG or JPG is best. Note that converting between machine formats can sometimes cause thread color assignments or jump stitches to shift.

This file format is difficult to open or convert without dedicated digitizing software because it encodes complex, closed-source mechanical commands. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded preview, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DHV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
