Historically, the only way to manage these files was with FlexiWrite, a niche application built by independent developer Samuel Green. It was distributed as a native Mac application and as a Windows Java Archive (.JAR).
Today, the .dfti format is a massive liability for data accessibility. It is a completely closed and proprietary format that relies heavily on outdated Java environments. Standard modern word processors like Microsoft Word cannot read it natively. Attempting to install legacy .JAR software just to open a text document is frustrating, highly impractical, and poses potential security risks.
If you find an old .dfti file, your priority should be converting it to standard formats like DOCX, PDF, or TXT. While converting to these formats may result in the loss of original fluid margin styles or specific background colors, it is the only way to ensure your written content remains accessible on modern devices.
