About DFTI files
A .dfti file is a proprietary document format created by the discontinued FlexiWrite word processor. Standing for Dynamic Formatted Text and Images, these files store text, images, and layout settings. Unlike standard text documents that mimic physical paper sizes (like A4 or Letter), .dfti files were designed specifically for on-screen reading, spreading text and embedded images fluidly across a computer monitor.
Historically, the only way to manage these files was with FlexiWrite, a niche application built by independent developer Samuel Green. It was distributed as a native Mac application and as a Windows Java Archive (.JAR).
Today, the .dfti format is a massive liability for data accessibility. It is a completely closed and proprietary format that relies heavily on outdated Java environments. Standard modern word processors like Microsoft Word cannot read it natively. Attempting to install legacy .JAR software just to open a text document is frustrating, highly impractical, and poses potential security risks.
If you find an old .dfti file, your priority should be converting it to standard formats like DOCX, PDF, or TXT. While converting to these formats may result in the loss of original fluid margin styles or specific background colors, it is the only way to ensure your written content remains accessible on modern devices.
Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DFTI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DFTI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DFTI converter.
