About D10 files
A .D10 file is a proprietary data file created by Drake Software, a widely used professional tax preparation suite. These files store highly sensitive client tax return information, financial data, and form preparation states for specific tax years. Typically, this format is managed exclusively using Drake Tax, though older legacy software like H&R Block Deduction Pro also generated files with this extension.
Because it is a closed, proprietary format, you cannot natively open a .D10 file in standard applications like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. This creates a major vendor lock-in disadvantage for accountants. If a firm switches to different tax software, or if a client requests a digital copy of their return, the raw .D10 file is practically useless. Retaining these files often requires maintaining an expensive, active software subscription just to access historical client data.
To overcome these limits, it is strongly recommended to convert the data. The best target formats are PDF for immutable document retention and client sharing, or CSV for migrating basic financial data and demographic tables to a new system. Note that proprietary tax form logic and complex formatting will be lost during any data export.
Converting .D10 files directly without the original software is notoriously difficult because the internal database structure is heavily obfuscated.
