The .brtex file format stores proprietary texture data for Nintendo Wii games. It is typically extracted from larger Binary RES (BRES) archives used by Nintendo's internal game engines. These files contain the raster images wrapped over 3D models in classic console games.
This format is strictly proprietary and highly restrictive. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and professional tools like Adobe Photoshop cannot open it natively. The format is designed solely for hardware execution on the Wii console, utilizing specific compression algorithms like CMPR. This means standard image processing libraries completely fail to read the pixel data.
To view or edit these textures, you must convert them. The best conversion target is PNG for lossless 2D editing. If you plan to inject the texture back into another game engine, converting to DDS is recommended to preserve mipmaps and hardware compression blocks.
Because standard online converters lack the specialized decoders required for Wii hardware formats, converting .brtex files is difficult. Often, only community-built modding tools like BrawlBox can properly read or export the internal data.
