About BR1 files

The .BR1 file extension is a proprietary format shared by two completely different ecosystems: vintage PC gaming and professional audio recording.

1. Battle Realms Replay File

Most commonly, a .BR1 file is a game replay created by Battle Realms, a cult-classic real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Liquid Entertainment. Unlike a standard video file (like MP4 or AVI), this file does not contain actual video footage. Instead, it contains a lightweight set of simulation instructions - coordinates, unit commands, and timing data - that the game engine uses to "re-enact" the match in real-time.

Practical Constraints:

2. BOSS Digital Recorder Data

In the audio world, .BR1 files are data files generated by BOSS (a division of Roland) digital multi-track recorders, such as the BR-1600 or Micro BR. These files (often named ARRANGE.BR1 or similar) store arrangement, rhythm, and track settings rather than the raw audio waveform itself. They are typically part of a larger folder structure on the recorder's SD card or hard drive.

Conversion Solution:
To convert BOSS projects to standard audio, users should not target the .BR1 file individually. Instead, use the official BR Wave Converter software to export the entire project's audio tracks to standard WAV files, which can then be edited in any DAW like Audacity.

3. Warlords Battlecry Save

Less frequently, .BR1 serves as a saved game slot for Warlords Battlecry by SSG. These are binary save states and are generally not convertible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BR1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BR1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BR1 converter.
