About BMQ files

The .BMQ file is a Re-Volt Mipmap File originally developed by Acclaim Entertainment. It stores pre-calculated, optimized texture sequences for the 1999 RC car racing game Re-Volt.

This format is strictly proprietary. It is used exclusively by the game engine to render graphics at varying distances to optimize performance. Because it is a closed game asset, .BMQ files have severe limitations for general use. You cannot open them with standard web browsers, nor can you edit them natively in popular software like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP.

If you are a modder creating custom cars or tracks, you must convert these files to standard editable formats like PNG or BMP. Conversely, adding new textures to the game requires converting BMP back to .BMQ. Standard online converters will fail to process this file because it lacks a conventional image header and relies entirely on game-specific binary structures.

This makes the file format difficult to open or convert. Emphasize that often only the original game engine or dedicated community modding tools can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BMQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BMQ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMQ converter.
