About AXV files

An .AXV file is an Annodex Video File, initially developed by CSIRO to enable hyperlinked, searchable, and annotated video streams. These files encapsulate Ogg video (typically Theora or Dirac) alongside Continuous Media Markup Language (CMML) tracks, allowing developers to insert hyperlinks and metadata at specific timecodes. You can open them using VLC media player or legacy Annodex browser plugins. However, users frequently need to convert .AXV files because the format is practically obsolete. It is not natively supported by modern web browsers, lacks hardware acceleration on mobile devices, and requires specialized software to parse the CMML annotations. The best conversion targets are MP4 or WEBM for maximum compatibility. Note that converting an .AXV file to standard video formats will permanently discard the embedded CMML hyperlinks and timed metadata, retaining only the base audio and video tracks. This file format is difficult to open or convert because the multiplexed annotation tracks often crash standard converters or result in unplayable files. If our analysis detects a supported underlying Ogg video format, conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AXV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AXA, WMV and YUV files.

The AXV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXV converter.
