About AWCAV files

The .AWCAV file is a proprietary 3D configuration format used by ActiveWorlds, a pioneering 3D virtual reality platform. It stores data for user-created custom avatars, including references to 3D meshes, textures, and animation files required by the game engine.

These files are managed almost exclusively by the ActiveWorlds client. The primary disadvantage of the .AWCAV format is its proprietary, closed nature. You cannot open these files in modern 3D modeling applications like Blender or Autodesk Maya. The files are entirely locked to the ActiveWorlds ecosystem, making them useless if you want to migrate your virtual identity to newer platforms like VRChat or Unity.

Users often need to convert .AWCAV files to standard 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or GLTF. However, standard online converters fail to process this extension because it relies on undocumented legacy game engine structures. If our analysis detects embedded textures or standard mesh streams, partial extraction may still be possible, though rigging and engine-specific shaders are typically lost.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AWCAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AWCAV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AWCAV converter.
