About ATOMSVC files
The .ATOMSVC file is an XML-formatted Atom Service Document used primarily by Microsoft Data Services, including SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SharePoint. It provides a standard way to expose data feeds to client applications. Rather than holding the actual database rows, this file acts as a manifest. It contains URIs pointing to individual Atom data feeds (.ATOM files), along with metadata describing the data collections available. Client tools like Microsoft Excel and Power BI consume these documents to establish live remote data connections. You can learn more about the underlying architecture via the Atom Web Standard Wikipedia page. The primary disadvantage of the .ATOMSVC format is that it relies entirely on external servers. If you are disconnected from the corporate network, lack authentication privileges, or if the source SSRS server is offline, the file is entirely useless. Furthermore, because it is structured as an XML web service document, it is not directly readable by standard spreadsheet users without a specialized parser or Power Query. Converting an .ATOMSVC file is inherently limited because it is a connection file, not a data container. Standard online converters fail to process it into a .CSV or .XLSX because they cannot authenticate and execute the remote server queries required to fetch the underlying data. You can convert the file to .XML or .TXT to inspect the source code and manually extract the feed URLs.

The ATOMSVC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ATOMSVC converter.
