A .ARFX file is an exported Augmented Reality (AR) effect package created in Meta Spark Studio. Developers and creators use these files to publish interactive AR filters, lenses, and masks directly to Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The file contains all the necessary data to render the effect, including 3D models, textures, audio clips, and interaction scripts.
The main disadvantage of the .ARFX format is its heavily restricted, proprietary nature. These files are strictly locked to the Meta ecosystem. You cannot natively use or share an .ARFX file on rival AR platforms like Snapchat or TikTok. Furthermore, the format requires a dedicated Meta runtime environment, meaning standard web browsers and typical 3D viewing software cannot open or interact with the file.
Converting a .ARFX file directly into a competing AR format (such as an Apple USDZ or a Snapchat Lens) is technically impossible because the internal logic is proprietary. However, an .ARFX file acts as a compressed container. The best conversion workaround is to extract the file as a ZIP archive. This allows you to recover the raw internal assets, such as GLTF or OBJ 3D models and PNG or JPG textures, although the original interaction scripts will be lost.
