About AM4 files
An .AM4 file primarily functions as a proprietary DVR security video file used by Amcrest and MP4CAM surveillance systems to store raw CCTV footage. Less frequently, the extension is used for photo mosaic image lists by the AndreaMosaic software, or as legacy project files for AutoPlay Media Studio 4 and Ashampoo Magical Snap 4. To open the video variant natively, users generally must rely on Amcrest Surveillance Pro or the specific DVR player provided by the camera manufacturer.
As a video format, .AM4 is highly restrictive and user-hostile. It is a proprietary, closed container designed to lock you into the manufacturer's software ecosystem. Standard media players like VLC and default operating system video apps cannot natively decode these files. This forces users to download bloated, often poorly supported desktop client software just to review critical security footage or share it with law enforcement.
For practical use, these video files must be converted to standard MP4 or AVI formats, which offer universal playback support across browsers and mobile devices. Note that extracting the raw video stream may occasionally result in the loss of embedded timestamp metadata or proprietary motion-detection flags.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert through standard tools because the video stream is wrapped in a non-standard container, and sometimes encrypted. Often, only the original DVR software can properly read or export the original data. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our tools can identify the file format, inspect the file hex, and extract text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying standard video stream like H.264, direct viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AM4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AM4 file to MP3, WAV, AM5, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP or RB, you can use Amcrest Surveillance Pro or similar software from the "DVR Security Video Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The AM4 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AM4 converter.
