Extract text from AM4 files
To convert your AM4 file to another format, you need Amcrest Surveillance Pro or other Video software.
To convert other file formats to the "Security Footage Container" file type, you need software like Amcrest Surveillance Pro or a similar tool.
The .AM4 extension represents two completely different file formats that often confuse users due to their conflicting nature.
Most frequently, an .AM4 file is a proprietary CCTV video recording exported from Amcrest surveillance systems (specifically MP4CAM DVRs) or legacy Ashampoo Magical Snap 4 recordings. Unlike standard MP4 files, these containers often lack the necessary file headers to play in standard media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime.
The Problem:
Users typically encounter a "File Corrupted" or "Unsupported Format" error when trying to watch security footage. Because the file contains raw H.264 video streams without a standard index, simply renaming the extension to MP4 rarely works and often leads to playback syncing issues.
The Solution:
For playback and editing, these files must be converted (remuxed) into a standard MP4, AVI, or MOV container. While the manufacturer's Amcrest Surveillance Pro software can view them, converting them to MP4 ensures compatibility with web browsers and mobile devices.
The second common variation is a project list file created by AndreaMosaic.
The Problem:
Users often mistake this file for the final mosaic image. However, the .AM4 file is only a text-based list that tells the software how to build the mosaic (referencing source images and grid coordinates). It does not contain the actual pixels.
The Solution:
You cannot "convert" this file directly to JPG or PNG using an online converter. You must open the file in AndreaMosaic and use the "Save Mosaic" function to render the final image.
