The .AFG file is a proprietary video container format primarily used by legacy AGFA digital cameras and AVerMedia AVerTV capture software. Structurally, these files rely on the standard RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) architecture, meaning they are essentially standard AVI files wrapped in a custom extension.
This file format presents severe compatibility challenges today. Modern operating systems, mobile devices, and web browsers do not natively support the .AFG extension. Uploading these files to social media or standard web platforms will result in immediate rejection. Furthermore, the original AGFA hardware is obsolete, and installing legacy AVerTV software just to view old TV recordings is highly impractical.
To make these recordings usable, you must convert them to universally supported formats like MP4 or MKV. Because the internal structure is an AVI stream, simply renaming the extension from .AFG to AVI sometimes allows robust media players like VLC to read the internal data. However, for permanent web and mobile compatibility, re-encoding the internal video and audio tracks to modern standards like H.264 is necessary.
