About AFG files

The .AFG file extension represents a legacy video format primarily generated by older Agfa digital cameras (such as the ePhoto series) or AVerMedia TV tuner software. While these files often contain standard video streams similar to AVI (using the RIFF container structure), their proprietary extension acts as a digital padlock, preventing modern media players like VLC Media Player or QuickTime from recognizing them automatically.

The biggest obstacle for users is accessibility. Because the format is obsolete, neither Windows nor macOS assigns a default application to open it. Users are often left with 'unknown file' errors even though the video data inside is perfectly intact. Additionally, raw files from these devices can be uncompressed or use inefficient codecs like MJPEG, resulting in large file sizes relative to their low resolution.

To view these memories on modern devices (smartphones, tablets, or web browsers), conversion is essential. For general viewing and sharing, we recommend converting to MP4 (H.264), which offers the best balance of quality and compatibility. If you intend to edit the footage in software like Adobe Premiere Pro, converting to MOV or standard AVI is preferable to maintain frame integrity without heavy compression artifacts. In some simple cases, purely renaming the extension from .afg to .avi may allow playback, but a full conversion ensures the audio and video codecs are modernized.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AFG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
