The .ACH file is an Automated Clearing House electronic funds transfer (EFT) file. The format has significant disadvantages for average users. It is an extremely rigid, fixed-width text file where every line must be exactly 94 characters long. A single missing space or misplaced character will invalidate the entire file and cause bank rejections. It is notoriously difficult for humans to read because it lacks internal formatting tags or delimiters. Furthermore, .ACH files often contain highly sensitive financial data, such as routing and account numbers, in plain text.
